Joseph Runs Through | Teacher

My Email: Joseph.runsthrough@washk12.org

Hi! My name is Joseph Runs Through. I'm Assiniboine from the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of Montana. While I was born in Montana, I was raised in St. George, where I lived until 2015. Since then, I have lived in Provo, Utah and Vernal, Utah. I am so excited to be returning to Washington County and to be joining the La Verkin Elementary community as a 5th grade teacher!

Most of my 8 years of teaching experience has been in the 6th grade, both in elementary schools as well as middle schools. I spent the past 3 years teaching 6th grade math at Uintah Middle School in Vernal. Though I really enjoyed that position, I'm looking forward to returning to an elementary classroom.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy running, birdwatching, photography, video games, reading, writing, and so much more. I can't wait to meet you!

I am originally from the coastal region of North Carolina, so I moved from the ocean to the desert!  I do miss the greenery and the salt air, but I also have a great appreciation for the beauty and expansive views that only the deserts of southern Utah provide.  I began my teaching career in North Carolina in 1995, as a 4th grade teacher.  My family moved to St. George in 1998, where I taught 6th grade for four years, then in 2002 I started teaching at LVES.  During my time here, I have taught grades 2nd- 5th and worked as a staff developer over math. I earned my M.Ed. from SUU during my first year here and graduated in May 2003, then finished my Administrative Endorsement soon after. I have loved my 23 years as a La Verkin Cub!  I am married to my best friend, Randy, and we will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in October! We have three children  and four grandchildren, who are my other best friends! We love going to the ocean and it is one of our annual summer family traditions. We also enjoy going on hikes and cycling together. Other things that I enjoy are running, family hang-outs, reading historical fiction and mystery novels.  I feel so blessed to be starting my 24th year as a La Verkin Cub!  I love the school community we have here, as well as the students and the families I have had the opportunity to get to know over the years.  As an educator, I’ve learned that “learning is a life-long endeavor" and one that I am so happy to embrace!

I'm a proud Southern Utah native and passionate kindergarten teacher, dedicated to sparking a lifelong love of learning in every child. Since beginning my career in education in 2021, I have developed a firm belief in nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally—through meaningful relationships and intentional instruction, a commitment that earned state recognition in 2024 with a Science of Reading award. I hold a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and am currently pursuing my doctorate at Utah State University. Outside the classroom, you'll find me cheering on my kids at their activities, enjoying the outdoors on horseback, or winding down with a good book. I’m grateful every day to live and work in this community I love.
