Ashley Hix | Teacher
My Email: Ashley.Hix@washk12.orgI first knew I wanted to be an elementary school teacher when I had the opportunity to teach preschool at my high school in Orem, Utah. I graduated from UVSC in 2007 majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I began teaching in Alpine School District where I taught second grade, first grade, and reading intervention. I taught for 11 years before becoming a mom to my daughter Lucy. We moved to the St George area 7 years ago for my husband’s work and shortly thereafter I became a fitness instructor at Hurricane Rec Center - come join me there anytime. I returned to teaching school this year and love that I can now do both jobs that bring me joy. Teaching is my passion but I also have a love of learning and am currently trying to learn Spanish and how to play piano. Other hobbies of mine include going on walks with my dog, Tulip and traveling with my family.
Heidi Tandy | Teacher
My Email: heidi.tandy@washk12.orgI’m excited to join the kindergarten team at La Verkin Elementary School! I’ve been living in La Verkin for the past five years, but I’m originally from Southern California. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Child and Adolescent Studies from California State University, Fullerton. For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a special education paraprofessional right here at La Verkin Elementary. Outside of school, I enjoy kayaking, hiking, and spending time in my garden. I look forward to an exciting year full of learning and laughter.
Paula Armstrong | Teacher

I graduated from Southern Utah University with a degree in Elementary/Special Education and I have my ESL endorsement. I have taught kindergarten and special education at LaVerkin Elementary over the past 8 years. My hope as a teacher is to help students to feel valued and find joy in learning.
Robin Mortensen | Teacher

I’ve taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 3rd grade over the past 12 years and hold endorsements in Early Childhood Education, ESL, and Gifted and Talented Education, along with a Master’s in Curriculum Design and Instruction. I’m passionate about helping students love learning and grow both in and out of the classroom. I value strong relationships and love spending time with my family—especially baking pie, jumping on the trampoline, and exploring together.
Lacie VanDam | Teacher
My Email: Lacie.VanDam@washk12.orgI'm a proud Southern Utah native and passionate kindergarten teacher, dedicated to sparking a lifelong love of learning in every child. Since beginning my career in education in 2021, I have developed a firm belief in nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally—through meaningful relationships and intentional instruction, a commitment that earned state recognition in 2024 with a Science of Reading award. I hold a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and am currently pursuing my doctorate at Utah State University. Outside the classroom, you'll find me cheering on my kids at their activities, enjoying the outdoors on horseback, or winding down with a good book. I’m grateful every day to live and work in this community I love.
