About Our School!
We are a Title I school with many opportunities for your student to shine. We participate in The Leader in Me program where each student learns leadership qualities and FranklinCovey’s 7 Habits. We focus on helping each student through interventions, Professional Learning Communities, clubs and character education.
The Leader in Me
We are so excited to become a Leader in Me school and help our students become the leaders that we know is within each of them. We have started a 3 year process with FranklinCovey to receive professional development in how to help students learn leadership qualities based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen R. Covey. Hopefully as you enter our doors, you will notice positive changes and will look forward to many more in the weeks and months ahead. We cannot wait to celebrate the greatness in each of your students.
The 7 Habits:
The Leader in Me process helps to create a common language within a school, built on proven principle-based leadership skills found in Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

• Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind® • Have a Plan
• Habit 3: Put First Things First® • Work First, Then Play
• Habit 4: Think Win-Win® • Everyone Can Win
• Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood® • Listen Before You Talk
• Habit 6: Synergize® • Together Is Better
• Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw® • Balance Feels Best get refocused
Each month we celebrate our students showing leadership skills by awarding Cubs of Leadership and have our anticipated character ed skit “Marvin and Jessie”.
Our students lead our assemblies, take visitors on tours of our school, and hold leadership responsibilities in and outside their classrooms. Some other leadership roles that students can participate in are:
- Lighthouse team
- Spirit Leaders
- Green and Clean
- Library Leaders
- Office Leaders
- Math and Literacy Leaders
- Technology Leaders
- Assembly Prep
- and more!
Here at La Verkin Elementary we strive to focus on each student and their needs by keeping class sizes as small as possible and through Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). Through this process interventions are put into place to ensure each student is learning each desired outcome. In addition, we have specialized reading interventionalists trained to work with students. They frequently assess and adjustments are made as progress occurs to help struggling students attain higher levels of learning.
3rd through 5th grades participate in the SuccessMaker Program in a dedicated computer lab, which is a personalized math and reading program that increases in difficulty as the student learning increases. Comparatively, Kindergarten through 2nd grade participates in Waterford Learning Program which is designed to do the same thing, but on a lower grade level.
Additional things we offer to extend your student are:
- Leaders In Excellence Medallion (completing/participation in school-wide academics and events- list is on main page of website)
- Geography Bee
- Spelling Bee
- Science Fair
- Imagine Contest
- Chess Club
- Literacy, Technology, Math Nights
PreSchool and Kindergarten
KINDERGARTEN- We have two full time kindergarten teachers and two OEK teachers that offer extended day kindergarten sessions well as extended lunch kindergarten. This provides additional learning opportunities to get our students the help they need in a small class-size setting. Registration for Kindergarten opens in March.
PRESCHOOL- We are so excited to have a preschool at LaVerkin Elementary. This is a great resource for our community and our future. The preschool serves up to 48 students per year and provides an environment full of learning, fun, and developmentally appropriate activities.
This is a class specifically set up to help prepare children for Kindergarten. We serve children 4-5 years of age and have class 2 hours a day, 4 days a week. This service is provided at no charge to the participants* There are 3 separate sessions: one in the morning, one at mid-day, and one in the afternoon.
This is a tremendous resource to help children get off to a good start to a successful and happy education.

The arts are alive and well at La Verkin Elementary with Visual Arts, Choir and Orchestra!
All students participate Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program. This program brings an arts teacher onto our faculty that coordinates art projects with our regular classroom teachers class curriculum. This means that EVERY student gets regular art instruction from a specialized art instructor in addition to the art instruction received in their homeroom class!
Our school choir is absolutely amazing! Students from 3rd to 5th grade can participate and perform year-round! This not only includes our school programs, but various local venues, such as the Dickens festival in St. George.
4th and 5th graders have the opportunity of learning string instruments through Hurricane Intermediate School in a before school orchestra program.
Our school has put a focus on acquiring more technology for use in the curriculum. We have:
- Two Computer Labs
- 60 device chrombook lab
- 3 COW’s (classroom sets of computers on wheels)
- At least 5 laptops or ipads per classroom
- Each classroom is equipped with an iPad, desktop computer, SMART board and projector
That is over 350 devices!!!
